The "AS-Interface® safety system" enables the connection of binary switching safety-related components, such as emergency stop switches, door contact switches or safety light curtains to the AS-Interface® network. The other AS-Interface® components (masters, slaves, power supplies, repeaters) remain unchanged. The signals of the safety sensors are evaluated by a safety monitor which does not only monitor the switching signals of the safety sensors but also continuously tests the correct function of the data transmission.

Its major advantage is the ability to provide a common connection of all standard and safety related components to one bus cable. At the same time, all of the advantages of the standard AS-i interface remain intact. In this way, safety tasks up to Safety Category 4 in accordance with EN 954-1 can be performed using AS-i Safety.
The Pluto AS-i module combines the functions of the traditional AS-i master and AS-i safety monitor into a single module. The Pluto AS-i can monitor safety nodes as well as control outputs, in total up to 31 safe/nonsafe nodes. It is also possible to use Pluto AS-i to monitor a system in the traditional way with a separate AS-i master. Up to 32 AS-i Pluto’s or other Pluto PLC models can be connected in a network via the Pluto Can bus. The Pluto AS-i module can read information from the other Pluto modules and their connected safety devices on the bus. The entire safety system can be programmed with the “Pluto Manager” programming tool with predefined safety function blocks. The Pluto AS-i module also has 13 regular I/O’s. Four of them can work as analogue inputs. Wiring and connection of sensors to the safety system has become even easier by using the AS-i bus and safety nodes.
